You know the spot. You’ve seen it a hundred times. The far bank, draped in overhanging trees and bushes, branches dipping into the water, shade covering the surface from the midday heat. It looks absolutely perfect. And it is — which is exactly why the fish are there.
Here in South Africa, whether you’re fishing a river, an estuary or a lake, big predatory fish love those shaded, sheltered banks. It’s cooler, it’s quieter, and the overhanging vegetation creates the kind of ambush cover that large fish spend their lives looking for. Every experienced angler knows this. The problem is getting your bait under there without leaving half your tackle box hanging in the branches.
The Cast You Can’t Make
Casting accurately to an overhanging bank 20 metres across a river is a skill. Doing it repeatedly, with expensive lures, in tight spaces, without snagging — that’s something else entirely. Most anglers either accept the risk and lose gear, or they settle for fishing open water and hope the fish come to them.
MiBuoy changes that completely.
Walk It Out. Fish It Clean.
Instead of casting across the river and hoping for the best, you simply walk MiBuoy out along the water until you’re at whatever distance you choose — and that distance can be as precise as half a metre from the opposite bank. No casting. No risk. No lost lures.
Once you’re at the right distance, you start walking parallel to the bank. MiBuoy tracks alongside you, holding your bait or lure right underneath those overhanging trees, fishing that perfect strip of water continuously. You’re not in the zone for a few seconds between casts — you’re in the zone the entire time you’re walking.
When the Strike Comes
Often with this kind of fishing, you’ll see the attack before you feel it. A sudden explosion under the trees, a flash in the water — predatory fish hitting from cover are aggressive and visual. If you’re using a lure, strike immediately. If you’re using live bait, this is where patience pays off.
I like to fish with the bail arm open, letting the line feather lightly through my fingers after the first hit. Give the fish time to properly take the bait, feel the weight of it in its mouth, and turn away. When you’re confident it’s got it — close the bail, let the line tighten, and set the hook. Clean, controlled and extremely effective.
Fish the Unfishable
The banks that are too overgrown to cast to, the shaded corners that hold the biggest fish in the river, the spots you’ve walked past for years knowing something lives there — MiBuoy lets you fish all of it. Without the risk, without the lost gear, and without the frustration.
Sometimes the best spot on the river is the one nobody else can reach. Now you can.
